Hand-Operated Slide Gate Valves – Manual Control and Shut-Off Valves
When a valve needs to regulate or shut off without control air or auxiliary power, the hand-operated slide gate valve is the most compact design solution. The SG01/SG02 series from the GS1 line uses two sealing discs sliding over one another instead of a plug and seat: short stroke, low actuation forces at the handwheel, high Kvs values, and very low weight in wafer design.
SG01/SG02 series overview
Why slide gate valves
Four reasons for the manually operated slide gate valve
The SG01/SG02 series of the GS1 range combines the slide gate sealing disc principle with handwheel actuation – regulating and shutting off without auxiliary power, in a short wafer-type design.
Slide gate principle instead of plug and seat
Two sealing discs – one fixed and one moving – open the cross-section transverse to the flow. The fixed disc is made of coated stainless steel 1.4571 as standard, while the moving disc is made of carbon material (carbon), SFC, or, in special versions, STN2. The short stroke noticeably reduces the required actuating force.
Control and shut-off in a single valve
SG01/SG02 is described as a universally applicable shut-off and control valve. The characteristic curve is available as either linear or equal-percentage, and individual versions are additionally documented with a shut-off device – one series for operating point adjustment and open/close duty.
High Kvs values in a compact face-to-face length
Documented example values at 100% stroke: DN20 = 6.4, DN25 = 11, DN40 = 26, DN100 = 154, DN125 = 237. Versions with limited stroke (e.g. 63%) deliver correspondingly graded Kvs values – the applicable value is determined from the type code.
Materials for neutral to highly aggressive media
Housing materials are carbon steel or galvanized steel and stainless steel 1.4408. The series is designed for neutral to highly aggressive media in chemical processing, process engineering, and plant construction. A metal bellows is optionally available if additional external stem sealing protection is required.

Comparison with other designs
- Gate valve with handwheel
- With the classic gate valve, such as the GA022 series with flanged design, rising stem and graphite packing, a plate travels across the full nominal bore: long stroke, tall installed height, many spindle turns. It remains the choice when full bore or pigging capability is required.
- Ball Valve
- Typical on/off valve with full bore and 90° actuation. Only suitable to a limited extent for defined partial openings, since the flow characteristic is unfavorable in throttling operation and puts strain on the seal.
- Manual Directional Control Valves in Pneumatics
- Series such as 214 and MV26 with detented hand lever actuation are 3/2-way control valves for pneumatic circuits – not process valves for piping systems.
- Rotary Spool Valves
- A distinct product line with a rotating spool element instead of linearly sliding sealing discs – different design, different application area.

Product Range
Slide Gate Valves at STASTO
From the handwheel-operated SG01/SG02 series to the pneumatic, electric and media-actuated sister series of the GS1 range.
Applications
Where hand-operated slide gate valves excel
Anywhere flow is regulated or shut off without auxiliary power - where face-to-face length, weight, and actuation force matter.
Presetting operating points
Where a flow rate is set once and rarely changed afterward, a handwheel-operated slide gate valve is the more economical solution compared to an automated control valve. The choice of characteristic curve determines the sensitivity across the operating range.
Bypass, start-up, and flushing lines
Short face-to-face length in wafer design and low weight make the series attractive for secondary lines where there's no room for long installation lengths.
Chemical and process engineering
For neutral to highly aggressive media: housing in stainless steel 1.4408, fixed sealing disc 1.4571 coated. For increased requirements on outward sealing, available with metal bellows seal.
Manual operation as a backup
In plant sections without a guaranteed control air supply, the hand-operated valve performs the same function as its pneumatic sister series, without depending on the air supply.
Plant engineering and retrofit
When an existing pneumatic slide gate valve installation is expanded with manually operated points, the sealing system of the GS1 series essentially stays the same - simplifying spare parts stocking and training.
Secondary lines in process plants
For dosing, flushing, and secondary lines where an operating point needs to be reproducibly set by hand - with a defined characteristic curve and documented Kvs value.
Ordering & Documentation
Type Codes, Certificates and Spare Parts
For a reliable selection of the correct version, we just need a few details – we'll take care of the rest.
Type Code Required
The complete type code per the technical datasheet encodes nominal size, body material, sealing disc pairing, Kvs rating and characteristic curve. If you don't have it on hand, the medium, operating pressure, operating temperature, nominal size and desired function – control or shut-off – are sufficient.
Inspection Certificate EN 10204-3.1
For select variants, an inspection certificate per EN 10204-3.1 (material, pressure, function, tightness) is documented and can be ordered as a separate line item. Please indicate in your inquiry whether a certificate is required.
Availability Depends on Variant
The series is offered in a large number of fixed, defined variants. Which version is available on short notice depends on nominal size, material and sealing disc pairing – we're happy to provide specific lead times upon request.
Spare Parts and Retrofitting
For handwheel-operated valves from the STASTO range, wear and spare parts such as spindles and spindle nuts are in some cases listed as separate line items – please inquire with series and nominal size.

Whether with or without a type code, we identify the correct variant and provide availability and documentation.
Compile Operating Data
Media, operating pressure, operating temperature, nominal size and desired function – control, shut-off or both. If a type key is available, that's all that's needed.
Configure Variant
We determine flow characteristic, Kvs rating, body material and seal disc pairing, and clarify options such as metal bellows seal or shut-off device.
Quotation with Documentation
You receive the assignment with variant-specific availability; an inspection certificate per EN 10204-3.1 can be ordered additionally for individual variants.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions about slide gate hand valves
Answers on design, nominal sizes, temperatures and how it compares to other valves.
What is a slide gate hand valve?
A slide gate hand valve is a handwheel-operated valve in which two sealing discs slide across each other, perpendicular to the flow direction, to open or close the flow area. At STASTO, this is the SG01/SG02 series within the GS1 range, in wafer-type design.
Which nominal sizes and pressure ratings are available?
The series is documented for DN15 to DN150 and PN16/40. Individual versions are available with PN10/40, larger nominal sizes or special pressure ratings such as ANSI600 – which combination is available depends on the specific variant, which we're happy to clarify.
What temperature range is the series suitable for?
The standard range is documented as −60 to +350 °C; galvanized versions have a lower range (e.g. −10 to +300 °C). The binding value depends on the specific variant and the technical datasheet.
Can a slide gate hand valve be used for control, or only for shut-off?
Both. The SG01/SG02 series is described as a versatile shut-off and control valve, with the characteristic curve available as either linear or equal-percentage.
What are the sealing discs made of?
The fixed sealing disc is typically made of coated stainless steel 1.4571. The moving disc is made of carbon material, SFC, or – in special versions – STN2, depending on the design.
How does a slide gate valve differ from a gate valve with handwheel?
The slide gate valve only needs a very short stroke perpendicular to the flow, while a knife gate valve moves a plate across the full nominal bore out of the flow path. This gives the slide gate valve lower actuating forces, a short face-to-face length and low weight; the knife gate valve remains the choice for full bore or pigging capability.
Are pneumatic hand slide valves the same thing?
No. Series such as 214 and MV26 with detented hand-lever actuation are 3/2-way control valves for pneumatic circuits, not process valves for piping systems.
What information does STASTO need for a quote?
Ideally, the complete type code from the technical datasheet. Without a type code, the medium, operating pressure, operating temperature, nominal size, and desired function are sufficient — we'll take care of the assignment.
