Electric Seat Valves – Process Valves of the SE14 to SE17 Series

An electric seat valve switches or distributes media where compressed air is not available or where a controller needs to actuate directly via electric signal. STASTO offers the SE14, SE15, SE16 and SE17 series with electric actuator: as 2-way shut-off valve in gunmetal or stainless steel 1.4408, as well as a 3-way version with mixing or diverting function – with female thread or PN 40 flange connection.

Why electric

Electric shut-off valve: the advantages of the SE series

The SE14 to SE17 series operate with an electric actuator, covering applications where a pneumatically actuated seat valve is not an option.

01

Electrically instead of pneumatically actuated

The actuator operates purely electrically – without a compressed air network, control line, or air preparation. Ideal wherever compressed air is unavailable, too costly, or undesirable in the application.

02

Two voltage variants per size

Each size is available in two versions: E04 with 24 V AC/DC and E05 with 90–260 V AC. This allows the same valve to be operated on low-voltage controls or mains voltage – example: SE14-10-RTE04 and SE14-10-RTE05.

03

Materials for different media

Body in gunmetal (SE14-RTE, SE16-RTE, SE17-RTE) or stainless steel 1.4408 (SE14-STE, SE15-STE). Sealing in the tested versions with PTFE.

04

2-way shut-off, 3-way distribution

SE14 and SE15 shut off or open. SE16 distributes with a diverting function, SE17 mixes with a mixing function – both in true 3-way design. Connection with internal thread or PN 40 flange.

Guide

Understanding electric globe valves: function, material, connection

A globe valve seals with a plug or disc against a seat. The electric actuator performs the motion that a piston carries out in the pneumatic counterpart. The points below help with selection.

Function types and number of ports

2-way (SE14, SE15)
Classic electric shut-off valve: medium is released or blocked.
3-way diverting function (SE16)
One inlet is distributed to two outlets – for example for bypass or switchover tasks.
3-way mixing function (SE17)
Two inlets are combined into one outlet, for example for temperature mixing.
Stroke time instead of switching pulse
The electric actuator travels within a defined stroke time, in verified datasheets between 27 s and 66 s – depending on part number and size.
Difference from solenoid valves
Anyone looking for a 2/2-way solenoid valve with coil actuator will find it in the separate solenoid valve range; the SE series work with an actuator.

Materials, connection and electrics

Gunmetal
Body material of the SE14-RTE, SE16-RTE and SE17-RTE series for general service media.
Stainless steel 1.4408
Body material of the SE14-STE and SE15-STE series for higher corrosion resistance requirements.
PTFE seal
In the certified versions, sealing is implemented with PTFE.
G or Rp female thread
SE14 with G female thread, SE16 and SE17 with Rp female thread – see the datasheet for the exact size per item.
PN 40 flange
The SE15-STE series comes with a PN 40 flange connection.
E04 / E05
Voltage code in the item name: E04 = 24 V AC/DC, E05 = 90–260 V AC.

Sizing: what really matters

Nominal size and DN
Nominal sizes vary by series, ranging in the certified examples from DN 15 to DN 40 – the item's technical data is decisive.
Operating pressure
Depends on the variant; verified examples range from 0–4.8 bar up to 0–40 bar. Always check per item and size.
Media temperature
Also variant-dependent; the SE14-10-RTE04 example is rated for −30…+200 °C. No blanket value applies across the series.
Mounting position
Actuator and flow direction determine the permissible mounting position – refer to the datasheet of the respective item.

Applications

Where electric seat valves are used

Typical tasks for the SE14 to SE17 series: shutting off, releasing, splitting, or mixing liquids and gases – without compressed air infrastructure.

Shutting off process lines

Electric shut-off valve in gunmetal or stainless steel 1.4408 for supply and return lines in process engineering plants.

Machines without compressed air supply

If the machine has no compressed air supply, the electric actuator takes over the valve function directly from the controller.

Media switching and distribution

3-way versions SE16 and SE17 distribute or mix media flows, e.g. for bypass and switching circuits.

Cleaning and water circuits

Stainless steel versions SE14-STE and SE15-STE for circuits with higher requirements on the housing material.

Distinction from pneumatic control

Where compressed air is available, a pneumatic seat valve may be a sensible alternative – the electric version is then not required.

Test rigs and supply units

Electrically actuated seat valves in test rigs and supply units, where low voltage 24 V AC/DC is specified.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Electric Globe Valves

Answers on function, selection, mounting position, and how these differ from pneumatic valves and solenoid valves.

What is an electric globe valve?

An electric globe valve is a process valve in which an electric actuator moves the valve plug against the seat to shut off or allow flow of the medium. It requires no compressed air, only a control voltage – for the STASTO SE14 to SE17 series, depending on version, either 24 V AC/DC (E04) or 90–260 V AC (E05).

What is the difference between an electric and a pneumatic globe valve?

An electric globe valve is actuated by an electric actuator, while a pneumatic globe valve is actuated by control air and a piston. Electric is the right choice when no compressed air network is available; pneumatic has the advantage where compressed air is already on hand and fast switching times are required.

Is an electric globe valve the same as a solenoid valve?

No. A solenoid valve switches very quickly via a solenoid coil, whereas an electric globe valve from the SE14 to SE17 series operates with an actuator and a defined actuating time – between 27 s and 66 s in tested datasets. Anyone looking for a 2/2-way or 2-way solenoid valve will find this in the separate solenoid valve range.

What mounting position is permissible for a globe valve?

The permissible mounting position depends on the actuator and flow direction and is specified in the datasheet for the respective item. Installation with the actuator facing upward is standard; any deviating position should be checked in advance so that condensate and the actuator's own weight don't affect function.

When do I need a 3-way globe valve?

A 3-way globe valve is needed when a media stream needs to be split or two streams need to be mixed. The SE16-RTE series is designed for the diverting function, and the SE17-RTE series for the mixing function – both in gunmetal with Rp internal thread.

Which materials are available?

Available materials are gunmetal (SE14-RTE, SE16-RTE, SE17-RTE) and stainless steel 1.4408 (SE14-STE, SE15-STE); sealing in the tested versions is achieved with PTFE. Material selection depends on the medium and corrosion requirements.

What pressure and temperature ranges are possible?

Pressure and temperature ranges are variant-dependent and must always be checked per item and size. Documented examples range from 0–4.8 bar to 0–40 bar; the SE14-10-RTE04 example is rated for a media temperature of −30…+200 °C and 0–12 bar.

What is the difference between E04 and E05?

E04 designates the version with 24 V AC/DC, E05 the version with 90–260 V AC. Both voltage variants are available for each size, so the same valve can be operated on low-voltage controls or on mains voltage.
